Ryan Hunt on Mobile Engagement Evolved with SessionM

· smokinghotcoffee

Today we have a guest from the startup trenches in San Francisco, Ryan Hunt of SessionM.

Gamification is a hot way to improve your application's retention and engagement with achievement badge's and rewards for actions your users are already taking in your app and actions that you want users to find.

What does it take to get viral social sharing these achievement badges?  Ryan says it has to be quality content that people naturally want to share with their friends, maybe even inviting them to join the experience.

We talk about the new kinds of contextual experiences on mobile that deliver a compelling new experience to users.  Another player in the reward currency market is beintoo.  While playing a game on his phone, Ryan's saw an ad that knew Starbucks was across the street and offered him $5 off his visit.

There's a lot of creative opportunity for mobile ad's that can geo fence, be interactive, reward the customer, and add relevance to the user.

Facebook's segmented advertising based on your interests, location, likes, habits and behaviors is

SessionM's founder previously sold Quattro Wireless to apple, which they used to power iAd.  They clearly have some expertise in this domain.

The main pain point SessionM is set out for is to help big brands get into mobile seamlessly.

One year out of stealth they have about 100 applications giving out mPoints, their reward currency.  Everything from smaller apps to big brands like Pandora, MTV News, Weather Channel, Crackle, and lots of games.

Achievements and rewards can even provide a map to your users so they always have something to do, and you get to guide them where you want your users to explore.

Things you do in these apps like opening it up, to reaching level 10, or other goals can give you mPoints, that can later be redeemed for gift cards to Amazon.com, iTunes, and others.

It's opt-in, now I'm hooked and trying to earn my next gift card, I'm looking for other apps with mPoints and more achievement badges to be earned.

SessionM makes power users out of your average user with gamification, but they also have an ad network on the badge pages.  They also just started offering Consumer Polls, that you can target at your own users or across the network to get insight from your audience.

We chat about the device landscape with Ryan and the quality of Amazon's Android app marketplace.  Mobile growth is undoubtedly going to continue as we learn new ways to make use of mobile devices.  Big brands using traditional ads like billboards will eventually see the advantages of digital contextual advertising.

With technology like retargeting, mobile and social data, it can start to feel creepy for the consumers, but Ryan reminds us the power of opt-in as a win-win for consumers and brands.

App developers and startups must checkout their free SDK as a way to engage and retain your users, while adding a revenue stream.

This space is still growing and experimental.  We love to see entrepreneurs exploring problems with creative solutions like these.  Thanks again to Ryan for opening our mind to what's possible with mobile engagement!
