Linus Olsson CEO of Flattr tells us how microdonations are changing the web economy

· smokinghotcoffee

Today we are very pleased to have Linus Olsson, the CEO of Flattr on the show to talk about the how the microdonation service got started over three years ago, recent changes that make it even easier to use, and where to go from here.

We learn how the Pirate Bay's co-founder Peter Sunde's came up with the basic idea for Flattr in the age of the Digg button, and a lack of ways for creative artists to get paid online.

Creators are putting Flattr buttons next to their content all over the web, plus there's a browser extension, but now with social API connections, you can "like" to flattr using youtube, and other networks making it even easier to use.

Linus gives us a tour of the site and shows us some of the top content creators who are making use of Flattr, who happen to be podcasters, some even paying the bills!

We chat about the state of donations and micropayment relationships online, in the current landscape of credibility on content sites and feedback mechanisms for liking or loving something.

We're confronted with the idea that today's popular micro payment stores such as the iTunes App Store, charge $0.99 no matter how much you use or don't use the application.  And you have to pay before you even get to use the app.  Instead, why not tie usage to payment?

Linus shares with us how Flattr's unique philosophy has survived many failed micropayment platforms such as Paypal's.  We love that they, "do what you're supposed to do", and support open platforms.

The possibilities for Flattr are endless once you start thinking about how you can use their API platform, and tools with modern creative mediums like video games and digital formats.  We encourage everyone to join Flattr and think about ways to use this great platform.

Thanks to Linus for his steadfast courage and inspiration for all us hopeful startup founders and entrepreneurs watching!  We're looking forward to see you in 6 months!

We hope you all enjoy this episode, please leave us feedback so we can make it better.
